The Chaffins section of town was one of the earliest sites for settlement in Holden. Off of Shrewsbury Street near the
West Boylston town line, was the location of the old "lime lot" discovered by Jonas Rice in 1723.
1753 - First mention of a school in the Chaffin section of town is in 1753
when a school is kept at the home of Jonathan Lovell for three
months.
1793 - In 1793 the sixth article of the March town meeting stated, "To see if
the Town will Grant to Request of Josiah Cheeney & others as Represented in a
petition Concerning them building a School house and Drawing their part of the
School money or any part thereof." This petition passed in the negative.
At this time the District was known as Dr. Chenery's. It appears that
the citizens of the easterly section of Holden chose to build a
schoolhouse. The building was located at the junction of Shrewsbury
Street and Doyle Road, but nearer the intersection than the current
building that is there today.
1845 - By 1845 this building was becoming crowded and dilapidated, and a
new building was built. In their report of March 2, 1846 the School
Committee stated, "In district no. 3 the house has been enlarged and entirely
remodeled, which furnishes both externally & internally a very pleasing contrast
with the old structure which was far from having any charms for either the old or
the young." The report later describes the house as being "convenient & pleasant."
1860 - On Dec. 18, 1860 Cyrus Chenery deeded the triangular piece of land
the school was sitting on, to the town for $1.
1871 - The entire school was repaired inside and out.
1872 - By 1872 the one room school was becoming crowded and dilapidated
once again. The School Committee reported the overcrowding. Some
students were forced to attend school at the small red brick
schoolhouse in Worcester at the Summit.
1879 - In 1879 the old school was sold to J. Albert Newell. A new building
was built a short distance westerly on the site of the building
currently there. The cost was about $1,000.

1898 - In 1898, Waldo E. Austin was paid $1,250 to enlarge the building. The
school was turned a quarter turn, the two entries made into one,
raised three feet, and a room the same size as the other was added.
Six large windows provided light. It contained slate boards and had
adjustable desks and chairs.

1918 - Chaffins School was again greatly over crowded. Before the
new school on Holden Street was completed, grades 4 and 5 were
held at the Swedish Chapel (Chaffin Congregational Church) in order
to help ease the overcrowding.
1922 - In 1922 a new three room schoolhouse was built on land on the west
side of Holden Street near the intersection of Shrewsbury Street.
The architect for the building was H. L. Meacham and the builder was
Raffaele Zottoli. The building was completed in 1923 for a cost of
$17,486.84. The old school house at Shrewsbury Street and Doyle
Road was sold to James G. Handy. Overcrowding continued to plague
the school, and in 1925 another room was added to the building. A
portable classroom was added to the rear of the building while a
solution to the overcrowding was sought.
1930 - In June of 1930, the town voted to authorize the construction of an
addition to the school as well as purchase an additional acre of land
adjacent to the school. $24,000 was allocated for the project. 1.75
acres of adjacent property was purchased bringing the school
grounds to 2.85 acres. The new addition was designed by Haynes &
Mason of Fitchburg and Hartford. The bids were higher than the sum
appropriated, and a special town meeting appropriated another
$6,500 to allow the project to go forward.
The general contract was given to local contractor James Miles &
Sons. School was in session during the construction. Only six days
were lost by the second and third grades while the opening between
the two sections was completed. Construction started in October,
1930 and was completed on January 5, 1931.
Chaffins School, 1945
The school consisted of eight standard classrooms on the main floor
for about 300 students. Two offices were also built. Drinking
fountains were installed in the corridors and the basement. Bulletin
boards were hung in the hallways. New light fixtures were placed
throughout the building. The basement was divided into three
sections. The south end of the basement had a 30' x 50' assembly hall
or playroom. In the center on the west side were two toilets. The
boiler room was on the opposite side of the basement. The north end
of the basement housed the manual training room and the boys'
playroom.
1931 - In 1931 Chaffins School purchased a radio.
1941 - Members of the Chaffins Mothers Club in 1941 convinced the Gale
Free Library and the School Committee that a branch library was
needed in the Chaffins section of town. On July 23, 1942 a portion of
the auditorium became the branch library. In 1950 the town voted
$800 to renovate the library. At his time the library was moved into
the basement portion of the 1923 building. Members of the Chaffins
Men's Club provided the labor.
1949 - At Town Meeting of March 19, 1949, the sum of $182,420.00 was
appropriated for an addition to the school. The addition was designed
by L. W. Briggs Company of 90 Park Avenue, Worcester, MA. On July
5, 1949 the construction contract for $197,633.00 was awarded to
Sewal & Smith Construction Company of Framingham, MA.

1950 - Four additional classrooms, a principal's office, a nurse's room,
and adequate washrooms were included as well as a new auditorium.
The cafeteria and kitchen was also updated to include an electric
water cooler, a stainless steel sink, and dishwasher. Final
cost was about $227,956.

1973 - Half-day kindergarten classes began at the school in September.
1998
1998 - Chaffins School closed its doors at the end of the 1998 school year.
Students attended the newly built E. Leroy Mayo School on Bullard
Street.
